How to Compare LED Face Masks: The Four Questions | NuYOU360

You have eleven tabs open. Four of the masks look nearly identical. Three of them cost more than your last flight. Every single one says "clinically proven," and not one of them makes it obvious what you would actually be buying.

That feeling is not you being bad at research. It is what happens when you try to compare LED face masks in a category where the marketing has outrun the disclosure.

So here is how to compare LED face masks honestly — four questions, including the one that tends to go missing from everyone else's guide.

The buying guides are getting better. Watch what drops out.

Brands in this category have started publishing "how to choose" guides, and the criteria they list are usually reasonable:

  • Wavelength accuracy — does the light land at the depth it claims to
  • Coverage — does it reach the whole treatment area evenly
  • Power — appropriate output, not maximum output
  • LED quality — consistent emission, unit to unit

None of that is wrong. It is a fair list. But notice what happens when the guide reaches "power." The framing you will see, almost word for word, is that more power doesn't always mean better results.

That statement is true.

It is also the single most useful sentence a brand can write if it does not intend to publish its power number.

Why both things are true at once

Skin does not respond to light in a straight line. There is a range where the response is good, and past that range you get diminishing returns rather than better ones. More is not automatically better. That part is real.

But look at where the argument lands. "More isn't always better" is being used to reach the conclusion that the number doesn't matter. Those are different claims.

If output can be too low or too high, then the number is exactly what tells you where a device sits. Too little and the session is a light show. Too much and you are spending time you didn't need to spend. You cannot know which one you are holding without the figure.

"Balanced power" with no number attached is not a specification. It is an adjective.

And here is the part that matters more than any of it: two masks can both say 10-minute session and deliver completely different amounts of light in those ten minutes. Session length is not dose. Dose is output multiplied by time. Remove the output and the session time tells you nothing at all. We walk through that arithmetic in detail in our piece on dose and irradiance.

The four questions to ask before you compare LED face masks

Ask these of any mask, at any price, including ours.

1. Are the wavelengths listed individually — each one, with its own role?

Not "multi-wavelength." Not "red and infrared." The actual nanometer figures, named separately.

A wavelength count on the box is a marketing number. Six wavelengths where two of them move the needle a few percentage points is not obviously better than four that are doing the structural work. Ask what each one is for, and ask what result is attached to that specific wavelength rather than to the device as a whole.

The same caution applies to LED counts. A single LED package can hold more than one emitter die inside it, which is common in multi-wavelength builds because it adds colors without redesigning the shell. So the same board can be described as 400 LEDs or 1,200 depending on whether a brand counts packages or dies. Neither count is dishonest. They are simply not comparable to each other. Ask which one you are looking at.

2. What is the irradiance — and where was it measured?

This is the question that separates the category, and almost nobody asks it.

Irradiance is stated in milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm²). But the same device produces wildly different readings depending on where the meter sits. Held against a single diode, at the brightest point, with the sensor touching, you can publish a number several times larger than what actually reaches a cheekbone at normal wearing distance.

So the number alone is not the answer. The measurement position is the answer. A brand that gives you a figure without telling you where it was taken has given you a headline, not a measurement.

In our own review of the category in August 2026, we found two patterns: a large share of the premium tier publishes no irradiance figure at all, and nearly every figure that is published comes with no stated measurement position and no third-party verification.

3. What is the exact FDA status of this exact model?

There is a real difference between FDA Registered and FDA Cleared, and the category blurs it constantly.

  • Registered means the facility and device are listed with the FDA. It is a filing.
  • Cleared means a 510(k) submission was reviewed and the device was found substantially equivalent to a legally marketed predicate, for specific stated uses.

"FDA Certified" is not a category that exists. Neither is "FDA Approved" for a device like this.

Ask for the K-number. Ask which model numbers are named on it, and what indications it covers. Every clearance is public record and searchable in the FDA's 510(k) database. A brand that holds one will hand you the number instantly, because it cost them real money and time to get.

4. Can you actually see the measurement?

A badge is a design element. A scan is a document.

Ask whether there is a measurement you can look at — how many positions were tested, what the range was across the mask, where the strongest and weakest zones fall. If the answer is a logo, you have your answer.

Applying the four questions to us

It would be a strange guide that didn't.

First, a distinction we make and most brands blur. We build two different classes of device, and they should not be compared to each other on the same criteria.

RADIANCE is an LED mask — five wavelengths, 415, 590, 625, 830 and 1072nm, across 400 individual LEDs. Broad coverage, whole-face, light-emitting diodes throughout.

Contour PRO is a VCSEL laser device with zone-mapped output — 460, 665, 850 and 1064nm, with the 1064nm channel delivered by 72 quad-chip VCSEL emitters. VCSEL stands for Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser: genuine laser chip diodes, home-use low-emission class, not a clinical aesthetic laser. We say "laser" plainly because that is what the component is. Output is deliberately concentrated by zone rather than spread evenly.

Two technologies, two jobs, two price points. Not a good version and a better version of the same thing.

Irradiance and position. RADIANCE measures up to 50 mW/cm² at the worn position — not at the diode, not at the brightest point, at the distance the mask actually sits from a face. Contour PRO was scanned at 36 separate positions across the mask: VCSEL zones read 84 to 95 mW/cm² with a mean of 91.5, and LED zones read 33 to 47. The spread is deliberate. VCSEL output is concentrated along the jawline and the structural perimeter, which is where we want the deepest-penetrating wavelength working.

Our headline number is smaller than several you will see advertised. It is also measured somewhere we are willing to name.

FDA status, stated exactly. RADIANCE is FDA Cleared under K242385, model M5. The $289 LED mask is FDA Cleared under the same clearance, models M226 and M226-A. Contour PRO, in both the LED and VCSEL versions, is FDA Registered, with 510(k) clearance in progress for the VCSEL model. We do not round any of that up, and we will not describe a registered device as a cleared one to close a sale.

The measurement. The 36-position scan exists, and we publish what it says — including the zones that read lower.

The founder's note

I used red light therapy every day for close to a decade before I ever sold it. It started with a back injury in 2016 and a recovery that took longer than anyone promised. Long before this was a business, it was a nightly habit and a lot of hours reading specifications I had to teach myself to interpret.

What I learned in that decade is that this category does not have a technology problem. It has a disclosure problem. The parts are good. The honesty about the parts is inconsistent.

So we built the brand around the thing I could not find when I was the one shopping: a company that tells you what the device does, where it was measured, and exactly what its regulatory status is — and then lets you decide.
